Shredded carpet feeds tomato trial: Friday 17th December 2010
From a plateful of ripe tomatoes to stabilising clay-based soils, shredded recycled carpet continues to lay down some interesting recycled applications. This is all thanks to co-operation between The University of Bolton’s Institute for Materials Research and Innovation, Carpet Recycling UK and shredding technology specialists Mach Tech Services.
The institute’s Associate Professor Dr. Mohsen Miraftab has been leading two research projects, one which is looking at producing a soil amendment using wool-rich carpet, and another which aims to improve soil stabilisation in areas which have problems because of clay-based soils using recycled mixed synthetic carpet.
One of Dr. Miraftab’s research students has been trying out recycled and granularised wool-rich carpets and mixing the shredded material with top soils to trial the growing of vegetables. Dr. Miraftab said, “With research funding from Capet Recycling UK and access to Lindner shredding technology at Mach Tech we have produced a range of granularised materials from wool-rich carpets and tested them in growing tomatoes and cabbages. It is too early in the investigation to predict the results, but given that wool is rich in nitrogen and sulphur, ingredients available in standard plant fertilisers, it is expected that the release of these elements would assist and enhance plant growth. Although the decomposition time required for wool may not be sufficient to demonstrate their effectiveness in the short period that these plants grow and bear fruits, judging by the thriving plants (see photos), wool may be weaving its magic.”
The second research project looking at reusing mixed synthetic carpet fibres in sub-standard soils or clays has shown interesting properties of enhanced compressibility and shear strength. Further work is currently in progress to quantify optimum fibre contents and mixing regimes for best results. The work is due to be completed by July 2011.
Using innovative shredding technology Mach Tech were asked by Carpet Recycling UK to run a range of tests using recycled wool-rich and synthetic carpets to break them down into a range of granular sizes. “The challenge was to produce a wide range of particle sizes in significant enough quantities for the research trials at the University of Bolton. We know that applications for recycled materials from natural and man-made fibre carpets are being rolled out all over the UK and have been delighted to support one of our local research centres and Carpet Recycling UK,” said David Ingham, from Mach Tech.
Trial shredding the used carpets Mach Tech used the Lindner range of Micromat shredders with different screens at 25mm, 50mm and 70mm and the Power Komet at 35mm. The small particles the tests produced make breakdown faster at the highest possible throughputs for natural carpets. The requirements for synthetic carpets were the same but the aim was to make the particles suitable for further processing.
Mach Tech have also pre-shreddded used carpets to make separation of fibres and other materials easier on the downstream equipment, and to be able to screen out any foreign objects that could potentially be added to the machinery.
The carpet reuse projects plus more projects from around the world considering the use of fibrous waste will be showcased at the upcoming Recycling Symposium to be held at University of Bolton on June 15 and 16 2011. For further information and to submit a paper to the event, visit http://www.bolton.ac.uk/IMRI/Symposium/Home.aspx

The show goes onwards, upwards and outwards for MachTech: Friday 17th December 2010
The MachTech Services and Lindner Recyclingtech partnership continues to reach new heights at the Recycling and Waste Management (RWM) show with the exhibition of the Jupiter 2200 featuring the new internal ‘Rammer’ concept, the biggest shredding machine to go public in the UK.
As well as arranging the challenging logistics of exhibiting Lindner’s impressive 32,000kg, 5.2 metre wide and 4.9 metre high Jupiter 2200 heavy duty, single shaft shredder at RWM 2010 Mach Tech are celebrating signing a new five year rolling contract with Lindner as their sole agents for the UK and Ireland.
The Jupiter is already being used in the pre-shredding process for commercial and industrial waste by Lincolnshire-based Mid UK and Chorley-based Fairport Engineering. Cemex, Lafarge, Holcim and Remondis are just a few of the multi-nationals that employ the Jupiter in tough pre-shredding environments.
Lindner’s managing director, Manuel Lindner, explained why the Jupiter presence in the UK will become more and more significant, “At the moment there is a similar situation in the British market comparable to the past situation in Germany where customers started to put faith in a reliable and proven cutting system in the pre-shredding process. They did this to save on process and labour costs and finally to get a better, more competitive product. Mid UK is the first customer in UK to buy and apply the Lindner Jupiter pre-shredding system for these very reasons.”
Commenting on the commitment to RWM and new contract with Lindner, MachTech’s Joe Hoyle, said, “Despite the tough economic climate supporting the RWM Show is very important to us and to the UK market in general. Lindner and MachTech have a reputation for showing large industrial shredding machinery indoors at Birmingham and this year, to underline the point, we have our largest ever exhibit.
“We are delighted to have cemented our partnership with Lindner for the future with a new five year rolling contract on the back of achieving the milestone of our 25th UK sale and installation of Lindner technology in RDF production.”

New Earth Solutions on the cutting edge of the waste challenge : Friday 17th December 2010
Having proven technology certainly save time and money, but it can also cut through the challenges of processing large quantities of mixed waste. New Earth Solutions explain how they find the technology to continue to deliver sound technical and environmental solutions to the UK's waste problems.
Driven by the outcomes of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, New Earth Solutions has developed a wide range of technologies and processes designed to recover value from waste and to mitigate its impact on the environment. They have brought together proven technologies from across the world in a configuration specifically adapted for the UK waste sector, and amongst the ground-breaking technologies being utilised is the Lindner Power Komet 2800 shredder.
New Earth solutions chose Lindner shredders, through UK agents MachTech, because of their ability to demonstrate numerous applications and reference sites, both in the UK and Europe. What was very clear was the shredder’s ability to very effectively reduce the size of pre-shredded materials maintaining the anticipated reliability and throughputs. Lindner proved that they build quality machines that offer value for money and importantly they have guaranteed running costs.
As a secondary application, the shredder is also used to produce an RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) of 40mm shred size at a throughput of 10 tonnes per hour. The output is consistent, reliable and ideally prepared for use in New Earth’s own pyrolysis-based energy from waste plant which is co-located at the waste treatment facility.
The shredder technology is kept on the cutting edge with the support service from MachTech. As well as regular servicing MachTech provides fast response times when support is required. Andy Bland of New Earth Solutions selected the Lindner Power Komet: “We considered a number of different shredders and visited a variety of sites in Europe but only Lindner were able to show us numerous machines in full production on applications similar to our own. Our main equipment supplier, Turmec Engineering who accompanied us on our fact finding trips were equally impressed with the standard of engineering used in the construction of the Lindner Shredders. The cost efficiencies that the Komet Series offers were clearly superior to all the information gathered from other suppliers. They have not failed to deliver.”

Lindner Triumph at 2008 Award: Tuesday 16th December 2008
Following success in 2007, which saw Lindner take 3rd place in two categories with the "Heavy Fraction Separator HFS 1200", Lindner Recyclingtech GmbH were awarded a prestigious 2nd place at the "Carinthian Innovation and Research Award 2008" for their secondary shredder, the POWER KOMET.
Lindner Recyclingtech GmbH is one of the pioneers in the shredding technology for various waste materials. Apart from the development, the complete construction as well as the prototype and serial-production of the shredding machines takes place at Lindner. Many years of knowledge and numerous product innovations have resulted in the development of the new secondary waste shredder, the POWER KOMET - a machine which is used mainly within the RDF marketplace.
The new develpoment of the POWER KOMET has both economic and ecologic peak values, with the outstanding attribute being the exceptional drive system with centrifugal mass. Independent experts confirm that with this concept, which is rather uncommon in this industry so far, an energy saving of at least 20% can be achieved. In combination with the existing cutting system developed by Lindner, energy savings totalling 50% can be achieved compared to competition in this market area.
The principle of drive systems with centrifugal mass was discovered by Leonardo da Vinci in the 15th Century. Lindner managed to harness this old technology into a technologically trend setting form for the efficient processing of waste. Besides the low energy consumption, the minimization of downtimes by maintenance works and the maximization of operation reliability, are essential for the operation of shredders. This can be achieved by two patent pending solutions: optimal accessibility to the cutting system and an extremely simplified maintenance by an elastic screen-clamping system. In shredding technology, the screens are used to classify the treated material in fractions of different sizes, and with the new clamping system these screens can easily and quickly be changed.
The POWER KOMET stands out by it's particularly dynamic design. The drive guards, which are made out of glass fibre reinforced plastics, are not only good looking but contribute also to an increase of security, a reduction of the operation noises and enable easier maintenance works by a simplified access to the drive unit.
The POWER KOMET was launched in May 2008 at IFAT (International Trade Fair for water, sewage, refuse and recycling) in Munich, Germany, and was extremely well received by customers. Mach Tech Services became the first agents to sell the POWER KOMET 2800 to progressive waste company, Wastecycle Ltd.

Power Komet: Thursday 3rd July 2008
The largest recycling expo in the World was the place to be be for the movers and shakers in the recycling industry, naturally MachTech helped man the Lindner Stand at the Munich IFAT.
Lindner used the exhibition to launch the Power Komet, a new concept based on the proven Komet range of machinery, these machines are used extensivley throughout the world for the production of RDF flock and whilst competitors launched machinery to target the RDF Industry, 10 years of R&D from Lindner has once again left them streets ahead of other manufacturers.
The new Power Komet offers substantial energy saving, excellent maintenance access and is, of course, backed up by MachTech in the UK.
RDF production is now much in demand in the UK and MachTech are currently working on a large number of projects to facilitate the production of RDF from MSW, Construction Industry Waste and other waste streams.
Lindner Press Release
At IFAT 08 Lindner-Recyclingtech GmbH introduced the POWER KOMET – the new generation in secondary shredding. The LINDNER centrifugal mass-drive system comes out on top – 20 to 50 % energy savings speaks for itself.
The intensified environmental awareness and the permanently increasing costs for energy are the main reasons why energy-efficient drive systems gain increasingly in importance also in shredding technology.
With the centrifugal mass-drive system Lindner-Recyclingtech GmbH succeeded in combining the highly efficient original Lindner shredding system with an energy saving drive system. Comprehensive endurance testing, carried out by independent institutions, confirm that the new Lindner drive system technology in the secondary shredder POWER KOMET has energy savings of 20 % compared to the Lindner KOMET. Comparing the Lindner KOMET to competitor's machines, which work with known drive systems such as gear drive, normal belt drive, direct drive e.g. the Torque drive, energy savings of more than 50 % were documented, based on the output. In comparison to machines with even more inefficient drive systems such as e.g. the hydraulic drive, the advantage is even greater.
For decades, Lindner-Recyclingtech GmbH has dealt with various drive systems for shredding tech-nology and the advantages of centrifugal mass drive systems have been used and implemented for many years. With the new countershaft drive in the POWER KOMET, the well known energy storage ability of revolving centrifugal mass is used.
Shredding machines don’t work with a constant power rating which is highly variable, as it depends on material input and cutting system. Because of the damping of those acyclic power requirements by the centrifugal mass drive system, there is a constant demand on electric energy and therefore enormous potential for energy savings. With this centrifugal mass drive system of Lindner-Recyclingtech GmbH peak demands can be reduced up to the five-fold nominal torque, whereas the electric energy is only used up to the two-fold nominal torque!
Besides the excellent value of low-energy consumption, the easy maintenance and the engine power of the LINDNER-drive systems must also be stated, as well as that the whole machine concept is fo-cused on easy, robust and efficient industry technology. First priority is always the highest possible availability through easy and fast maintenance possibilities as well as the worldwide availability of machine components (e.g. drive motor, belts, etc.). With the new secondary shredder POWER KOMET, the availability has been increased thanks to solutions which are patent pending.
Lindner-Recyclingtech GmbH can refer to more than 10 years of experience in the field of driveless high-torque belt drives with a torque of 70.000 Nm. In this period more than 300 driveless high torque belt drives were implemented.
